The concept of personal mastery can be described as the continuous tension between an individual’s current reality and their personal vision, or goal (Senge, 2006). Those pursuing personal mastery are “continually expanding their ability to create the results in life they truly seek” (Senge, 2006, p. 131). Personal mastery is a lifelong endeavor that requires reflection, avoiding assumptions, practicing effective conflict resolution, and balancing inquiry and advocacy (Senge, 2006). Further, the pursuit of personal mastery requires an individual to evaluate their existing assumptions about the world and eliminate erroneous ways of thinking. Therefore, when someone evaluates their current assumptions, they are pursuing personal mastery. A student pursues personal mastery as they continuously strive to hone their craft and in doing so reflect on previous experiences, forego assumptions, and collaborate with others to overcome challenges. An organization and its leadership pursue personal mastery as they align policies and practices, foster an environment dedicated to openness and growth, and reflect on the needs of staff and customers.
